What actually separates one spray body from another

Before ranking specific models, it helps to know what really varies between spray bodies. Most look similar from the outside — a plastic cylinder with a retractable stem — but the real differences come down to five points: (1) material quality (ABS+PC vs plain ABS vs generic plastic), (2) whether an anti-drain SAM valve is fitted, (3) the quality and serviceability of the internal filter, (4) whether a built-in pressure regulator (PRS) is included, and (5) the mechanical tolerances of the stem, which determine how quickly it wears loose over the years.

Stem height (4", 6", 12") is not a "quality" choice — it is a functional one. 4" (about 10 cm) suits regularly mown lawns. 6" (15 cm) suits taller grass or low bedding plants. 12" (30 cm) clears low hedges or tall flower beds. PRS (Pressure Regulating System) means a built-in regulator that limits pressure at the nozzle to a fixed value (typically 2.1 bar / 30 psi). The Rain Bird 1804 is the best-selling pop-up spray body in the world for residential use. Weaknesses: the SAM valve is optional — the base version without it tends to drip after shutoff on sloped gardens, and the SAM version costs nearly 50% more. Best for: the safe default choice for roughly 90% of residential installs. Flat garden: base version. Slope above 5%: SAM version. Static pressure above 3.5 bar: USF-PRS version.

Rain Bird 1806/1812 and the Hunter variants: when you need more height

The 1806 (15 cm) and 1812 (30 cm) are identical to the 1804 apart from stem length. Choose the 1806 for lawns left to grow taller or low ground cover, and the 1812 for shrubs 20-40 cm tall or low hedges. Caveat: a longer stem flexes more in strong wind — the 1812 is a poor choice in exposed, windy spots.

The Hunter Pro-Spray PS Ultra (PROS-04) is the direct rival to the 1804: same 4" height and thread, but with a check valve fitted as standard at no extra cost — a clear edge over the base 1804. Toro 570Z Pro: the most fully-specced option

The Toro 570Z Pro in PC (Pressure Compensating) trim is the most technically complete spray body for residential use. Datasheet: 4", 6", 12" heights, reinforced ABS+PC body, tool-free removable filter, check valve and pressure regulator (holding 2.1 bar at the nozzle across a 2.4-5.0 bar inlet range) both fitted as standard. Strengths: PRS and SAM included at no extra cost — variants Rain Bird charges more for — plus a tougher PC body. Weaknesses: lower stock availability at UK bricks-and-mortar retailers than Rain Bird/Hunter, and Toro-specific spares are often only available online with 5-10 day delivery. Best suited to gardens with static pressure above 3 bar where you want a built-in regulator without paying the Rain Bird USF-PRS premium.

K-Rain Pro-S and Gardena S80: budget or closed ecosystem

K-Rain is the lesser-known American brand in the UK market. The Pro-S costs £3-7, up to 40% less than a base Rain Bird 1804, with honest residential-grade specs, but two caveats: spares are hard to find at UK retailers (mostly online only), and expected lifespan is 8-12 years versus 15-20 for Rain Bird/Hunter. Suits budget-constrained projects where longevity is not the priority.

The Gardena S80 (ref. 1568) belongs to the closed Gardena Sprinklersystem ecosystem, with a proprietary quick-connect fitting — not compatible with standard 1/2" BSP thread. Pop-up height around 8 cm, radius up to 3.5 m, price £12-22. Very easy installation and wide availability at UK DIY chains, but weaker performance for the price versus professional brands, and a shorter 5-8 year lifespan. Only makes sense if you already have a full Gardena system installed.

Question 1 — what is your static pressure? Above 3.5 bar, pick a PRS model (Rain Bird USF-PRS or Toro 570Z Pro) instead of fitting a separate regulator. Common questions

My spray head waters a path as well as the lawn. How do I fix it? Rotate the nozzle arc to exclude the hard surface, then check if the radius is too large. If the path is within the sprinkler's throw radius even with the arc corrected, reduce the radius via the adjustment screw (maximum 25% reduction without significant uniformity loss) or move the head inward.

Can I use a 6" (15 cm) pop-up body instead of 4" where grass is tall? Yes. Taller pop-up heights (5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm) prevent tall grass or ground cover from blocking distribution. Use 10 cm pop-ups for grass kept above 5 cm, and 15 cm bodies for ornamental grasses or low shrubs. The body cost difference is small (€2–4 extra per head).

Do spray heads need winterising in mild climates? In regions where temperatures stay above −2 °C all winter, spray heads typically survive without special winterisation.
